You will love the remote and dramatic Cantal Mountains. The scenery is unique with Volcanic peaks and green mountain pastures . The pastures are dotted with ruined ‘burons’, the ancient farm buildings used by local herdsmen in the summer months but now left to ruins.
Uncut meadows and ancient hedgerows, from May to September, are full of a vast range of wild flowers, of all imaginable colours. These areas in turn attract a wide range of beautiful butterflies with some varieties uncommon in the U.K.
Add to this the wide ridge paths and stunning Volcanic peaks and the Cantal really is waiting to be discovered.
Here at AuvergneActive we offer you three different walking holiday options outlined briefly below.
For all options you are provided with local maps (1:25 000 scale), walking route information and notes. We offer full local support and, where applicable, baggage transfers. Accommodation is on a full board basis with breakfast, picnic lunch and an evening meal. Enjoy the local produce as you begin to feel at home in is this most welcoming region of France. The hospitality is warm and sincere, and the traditional cuisine makes good use of the exceptional local meats and cheeses.
MONTS DU CANTAL DISCOVERY TOUR

The Monts du Cantal Discovery Tour gives you the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the Cantal Mountains from a single base.
You will stay in our home ‘Les Sources’ and enjoy the comfort of a large bedroom with en suite facilities. We are always on hand to offer local support and advise and you can relax in our large south facing gardens at the end of a long days walk.
The Discovery walks leave from St Jacques des Blats every day following ridges, ancient paths, small country roads and way-marked footpaths. The terrain varies from woodland, meadows and heath and rocky broad ridges. If you arrive by car and wish to venture further a field then there are many more stunning walks just a short drive away.
We do our very best to tailor the daily walking to your own abilities. As this a mountainous region, a certain amount of ascent and descent is inevitable but you will not feel as though you have to climb to the top of a mountain every day (unless of course you want to!). Les Sources is based at 990m altitude so your walking start point is already higher than any point in England.

MONTS DU CANTAL CIRCULAR TOUR

2 x nights ‘Les Sources’, 2 x nights mountain guest house, 1 x night mountain hotel, 2 x nights ‘Les Sources’
The Monts du Cantal Circular Tour gives you a real sense of exploration and achievement.
Your holiday begins and ends with 2 nights at our home ‘Les Sources’, allowing you time to recover from your journey and settle into the pace of life here in the Cantal. You can warm up on day 2 with a circular walk incorporating the highest peak the ‘Plomb du Cantal’ (1855m). We are always on hand to offer help and advise and on the morning of day 3 we will ensure that you are fully equipped with maps, routes and notes before setting off on your journey. Where applicable, we will transport your bags on a daily basis so they are awaiting you as you arrive at your overnight stay.
This circular tour takes you from the Vallée du Cére into the Vallée du Jordanne as you walk along high ridges and through green pastures. You will also have the opportunity to climb to the peaks of L’Elanceze and Puy Griou. The scenery and the views will astound you. The volcanic peaks are quite unique and dramatic and the summit of Puy Griou that so often dominates the landscape changes shape from every direction.

Our Tailor Made Tour endeavours to give you the very best of what is on offer during your stay.
The remote corners and peaks of this breathtaking landscape can only be reached on foot yet there is much more to discover in the Cantal should you wish to explore by car, motorbike or even pedal power.
The Cantal is an outdoor paradise waiting to be discovered. You may only wish to come for a few days, you may wish to stay for longer than our 7 night package.
Maybe not all of your party are walkers or perhaps you don’t wish to walk every day.
We offer comfortable accommodation (wherever possible en-suite). You may prefer something a little more special, you may prefer a youth hostel based circular tour or you may even want to spend a night in a tree house. Swing through the trees on a high rope course, follow the auvergne ‘Route de Fromage’ by car. The list really is endless.
All Tailor Made Tours must begin or end with a minimum 2 night stay in our home ‘Les Sources’.
